How It Started

Mitsubishi was founded back in the late 1800s. It was only after the shipbuilding division split in the early 1900s that Japan released its first mass-produced car: the Mitsubishi Model A. In the 1960s, the Mitsubishi Motor Sales Corporation was established. Then, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. became the sole shareholder of the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in the 1970s.

The history of Mitsubishi went in a different direction in the 1980s as Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. was established with the Mitsubishi Corporation as a joint capital investment. Not long after, Mitsubishi Motor Sales Corporation took over operations, and in 2015, car production at Mitsubishi Motors North America was terminated.

In 2016, MMC and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. came together in a business alliance.
