How to Calculate Gas Mileage

Illuminated Fuel Gauge

Each new vehicle that is produced is given a rating by the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA on its fuel efficiency. There are a number of factors that contribute to these ratings; however, there are often disclaimers that state the mileage does vary. However, this had led many Port Orange drivers to ask themselves how to calculate gas mileage. So, let’s take a look at calculating gas mileage in more detail with Daytona Mitsubishi today! What is Considered Good Gas Mileage?

What is good gas mileage really depends on what type of vehicle you drive. For example, if you drive a compact car, you’re likely to get better gas mileage than if you drive an SUV. furthermore, if you’re considering a hybrid car, you’ll always experience better gas mileage than if you drive a traditional vehicle.

If gas mileage is important to you when purchasing a new car, it’s important to keep in mind what exactly you’re looking for in your next vehicle to make sure you choose the right one for you.

Gas Mileage Calculator

Check out this easy gas mileage calculator to see how much gas you’ve used within a certain range of miles:

  1. Fill up your tank and reset your trip odometer prior to beginning your journey. Be sure to record the mileage prior to refilling the tank. It’s also important to find out how big the gas tank is by checking your owner’s manual.
  2. You can then drive as you would at any normal time. However, it’s important to note that if you accelerate quickly or change your driving habits, you won’t have the exact gas mileage for your normal driving conditions.
  3. Now fill up your tank again and record the mileage. The longer you want to refill your tank, the more accurate the calculation will be as it better replicates regular driving conditions.
  4. Just divide the number of miles traveled by the number of gallons of gas your vehicle takes to refill. So, this would be miles driven divided by gallons of gas that were used.
  5. If you forget to check how many gallons you filled up your car at the pump on on your gas receipt, you can go by where your tank was when you refilled (i.e. ¼, ½, or ¾) and then divide out your total tank capacity accordingly to come to the number of gallons refilled. Then, divide miles driven by that approximation. This not be as accurate, as the gas gauge in some vehicles is not 100% accurate. Digital gas gauges show you exactly how many gallons of gas is in the tank, however, traditional analog gauges are much easier.
