Check Your Gas Cap to See if That Resets Your Check Engine Light

If you have a loose or cracked gas cap, this can cause fumes to release, causing your engine light to turn on. When you are safely parked, remove the gas cap and then put it right back on. If the engine light does not turn off, then you may need to disconnect and reconnect the battery before driving your car.

How to Reset Your Check Engine Light by Disconnecting the Negative Battery Cable

If you’re still getting the check engine light and you haven’t fixed the problem, then you will need to go for an engine light reset. To those who are not familiar with what is under the hood of the vehicle, we at Daytona Mitsubishi near Palm Coast break down the steps below:

  1. Turn off the ignition and put on safety glasses and gloves
  2. Locate the negative terminal with the black cap and a negative (-) symbol. The positive cap is red with a positive (+) symbol.
  3. Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench, and pulled the negative connector from the battery. Keep this to the side for 30-60 seconds.
  4. Then you reconnect the negative cable and tighten it with your wrench.
